I read a quote in an article on mental health in the music industry a couple of weeks ago and it made my skin crawl.

“While we can schedule ourselves to have breaks, the music industry is rapidly evolving, therefore we have no choice but to keep up even during a pandemic.”

I absolutely stand against this kind of thinking.

The industry is not a standalone entity that controls us and makes us do things. It’s not the industry that’s evolving, it’s the people in it.

Change starts with us, and we are not led by an industry. The “industry” is made up of the people who created it and continue to subscribe to its made-up rules.

If we feel we cannot keep up with the rapid changes, should we not look at what we can do to change that, rather than saying, “we have no choice but to keep up, even during a pandemic.”

So in this month's episode of my radio show Mind The Music I want to address this and help artists and professionals in dance music to see their thinking, so that they can change it - should they choose to, because it is a choice and you can make it.

It all starts with awareness first and accountability second, which both can lead to shifts in our mindset. When you change your thinking, you change your actions and behaviour.

We are responsible for the changes that need to happen when it comes to mental health in this industry and just changes, period.
