Waiting Around For Your Sudden Big Break In Electronic Music Is A Thing For Brats
The Importance Of Investing In Personal Development
“It’s hard to make it unless a big opportunity suddenly comes along and things really lift off for me.”
“Why I make music? Because I want to make it big.”
“I aspire to be the world's best music producer.”
You don’t know how many times I’ve heard people like you say stuff that. And it’s such bullshit. I mean, do I wish a million dollars will land in my lap tomorrow? Sure thing! Do I have dreams? Hell to the motherfucking yes! Do I just sit around waiting for that to happen? Fuck no.
You shouldn’t be sitting around like some spoiled brat expecting a successful career in electronic music to land in your lap and all will be golden in your world. Maybe you don’t mean to and it’s great to have big dreams, but why wait until it comes to you?
Instead, you should start investing in your personal development so that you can actually get things done yourself and have a better quality of life.
There is no magic pill
The pill you might be thinking about right requires a conscious choice on your end. The choice for you to take it or not.
Many of you picture a sudden big break in electronic music as something that happens to you. A label finds you. Your work is picked up and suddenly everyone loves you. And because of someone else, you get the opportunity you always dreamed of and you are able to make a living doing what you love most.
Look, there are better uses of your time and it’ll actually help you build a life around your passion in a fulfilling way, improving your overall quality of life.
Making a living in electronic music involves soul searching, figuring out what you want to do and why you want to do it, making a plan and showing up for that plan consistently. Personal development helps you do all that and more.
Why should you invest in yourself? The importance of personal development in electronic music
Personal development contributes to overall better quality of life. Improved quality of life enables you to make better and more conscious decisions for yourself and your career so that you can feel confident about the life you choose, and live a happier, healthier more fulfilling life making a living doing what you love.
Here are just a few areas personal development can assist you in achieving that:
It helps you with overcoming the blocks that have kept you from reaching your goals in electronic music and becoming the person you truly wish to be.
No more comparison hangovers! When you learn more about yourself, as well as others, and how you can live life with deeper personal satisfaction, you feel less inclined to compare yourself, your skills, your music, your talent and your life to that of others who are also trying to make it in electronic music. Wouldn’t that feel liberating?
You become more resilient as you learn to get better at accepting change so that you can adapt to unexpected or out of your control challenges, whether good or bad, much better.
It helps you build confidence so that you can feel good about yourself. And when you feel good, you do good! You make more sound decisions and are able to better and more effectively solve any problems that come up. You need this to achieve your goals and have success in music and in life.
When you are personally growing and succeeding, others around you are probably going to notice. Your story, your progress, and your success can inspire others in such a way that you can have an impact and change people’s lives with your work. That’s what you want, isn’t it?

What is the best way to invest in yourself?
Investing in yourself happens on several levels and comes down to energy:
Your money
Your time
Your focus
Your bodily energy (what I call your wokeness)
Your attention
Those are all forms of energy.
Each time you decide to commit to something, you devote energy to that. In order to properly invest, you need to get really intentional about your investment BEFORE you invest.
Not only should you think about how much money you can allocate towards the thing you want to invest in, you should also think about how much wokeness, time, focus, attention and time you want to budget. Not CAN, but WANT.
How much are you WILLING to give?
It can feel quite difficult to “measure” focus, attention and wokeness, but it’s really important to determine how much you are willing to give. Start with looking at time and money because these are measurable deliverables. Know that in the end when it comes down to your energy and resources, they are all connected.
How much more time and money are you willing to lose feeling stuck and lost? What is it costing you now? And how much time and money are you willing to give to get unstuck and find your direction? Your time will require your attention, focus and energy as well, so bear that in mind as you make up your cost-benefit analysis.
You want to identify the gaps in your knowledge and set of skills. Focus on what you are missing and still need to get more clarity on which direction you eventually want to take in electronic music so that you can feel confident about the lifestyle you choose as you build a life around your passion.
