How to promote your music without being a dick
Have you ever had someone react to your Instagram story poll about lipstick with a self-promotional, impersonal message about their music?
In this video I share that exact story because it happened to me.
I talk about:
- How self-promotion can be sleazy and selfish,
- Why your tactics won’t work if you’re not willing to give something back,
- The importance of building genuine relationships for your DJ career.
After you’ve watched the video, think about how would you would like somebody to share their music with you.
Below are a few more things to avoid if you don’t want to kill your chances of getting your music in front of people.
Have business cards
Have business cards on you at all times. You never know who you’ll run into.
Do your research
Take the time to research the people you reach out to. You’re expecting them to spend their time listening to your music. What are YOU offering them? This should be an equal relationship.

Is it a match?
Don’t reach out with your own agenda in mind. Reach out with the aim of actually getting to know this person. Do you click? Do you actually like each other?
Building a mutual bond is vital to building a strong, sustainable network that ensures longevity for your career.
Listen to this episode of Mind The Music where I brought on my very own marketing coach to talk about how to build a following based on strong relationships.
This episode is definitely for you if you are:
Confused about how to build an audience.
Still convinced that you’ll make something and then magic will happen.
Oblivious about the importance of building relationships, networking or even how to network.
Be considerate
Don’t cold email 20 people in one go and put everyone in BCC. It clearly shows you’ve just sent a group of people the same email. Instead, be considerate. Send each and every one of them a thoughtful, personal email with the aim to start a genuine conversation.
Promo on social media
When self-promoting your music on social media. Don’t spam people’s inbox on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn with some sort of sales talk and call to action like “share my music”. And don’t use IG story polls to self-promote, it’s so sleazy. Here’s an example of how to NOT slide into someone’s DM
Facebook groups
This is something you need to get really smart about. Is it getting you anywhere to be a member of 10 groups with over 20K members, blindly posting your tracks in there and not even getting a like?
