Mental health in the electronic scene is a topic that has become more and more discussed this past year, and has been catapulted into the spotlight after Avicii’s death in April last year. However, not even a year later, after The Prodigy’s Keith Flint committed suicide, the question arises: has enough been done for mental health in the dance music industry?

We weren’t supposed to die chasing the dream.
— Pete Tong at IMS Ibiza 2018 (opening speech, just months after Avicii passed away)

In this episode I’m highlighting AFEM - The Association For Electronic Music, an organisation lobbying for a more positive, healthy work environment in the dance music industry and one I have joined this year in the hopes of being able to help make a positive impact through their mental & physical health working group.

I spoke to AFEM’s Regional Manager Tristan Hunt about the state of wellbeing in the dance music industry today.

We’ve covered:

  • Whether or not things have improved in terms of mental health initiatives in comparison to 2018,

  • Some of the biggest turning points for mental health in the dance music industry this year,

  • AFEM’s role in mental health in the scene and this year’s highlights for the organisation - including AFEM’s Mental Health Guide For People Working In The Music Industry,

  • How artists are more susceptible to mental health issues on both ends of the spectrum, ranging from a bedroom producer “slaving” away to build up a career to people like Avicii working a schedule which was many times more grueling than anyone can take.

  • How we can help to reshape the way the electronic scene sees artists and how to work with them.

And, we’re taking a little sneak peek into 2020!

I hope you’ll enjoy this episode!
