On this episode, I’m talking to Natalie Maddix.

Natalie is a vocalist, songwriter, producer and for the past 7 years Founder & Creative Director of the mighty House Gospel Choir. On a mission to inspire, elevate and educate the music industry on the true value of vocalists and musicians Natalie also formed REP (Record Everything Properly) Vocal Agency which offers work, advice and guidance to session vocalists.

From growing a collective of 12 vocalists into a diverse community of 150; unity, peace, love, respect and gratitude have always been at the centre of all of the projects she has managed over the years.

Armed with a love of Jamaican Soundsystem culture, Maddix understands the power of collective music-making and its ability to be a force for change. In a world that seems intent on pulling us apart, Maddix believes that coming together is an act of resistance. She often tells anyone that will listen, “We can't all speak at the same time and have our voices heard, but we can sing together as one voice and be understood”.

Natalie Maddix shares experiences and advice for womxn of color on how to cope with double standards in dance music.

On this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What Natalie and House Gospel Choir do to represent and educate on the true value of vocalists and how dance music is for everyone, as long as we appreciate and respect its origins.

  • Colourism and how discrimination on the basis of how dark you are comparatively affects a person’s confidence.

  • We chat about a clear pattern that exists in dance music where black artists don’t get as many opportunities or are just not mentioned like white or lighter-skinned artists and how it’s the responsibility of the people who decide what gets pushed out there - which is mainly a projection of their own world and thus, predominantly white.

  • Natalie’s advice for black artists on how to cope with double standards.

  • Learning about racism and injustice is a life-long commitment.

  • Natalie’s debut as a producer! Support by purchasing House Gospel Choir’s album “Rechoired” here.

If you struggle with double standards as a black or POC artist in dance music and you and you’re looking for uplifting and strong representation of what’s possible so that you can dream of your possibilities in dance music beyond what you have come to believe so far, then this episode is definitely for you!
