How to prepare for your first life coaching session
This is the fourth installment of my miniseries on (night)life coaching. There’s a lot to say about the many different types of life coaches out there. But this content is geared toward people who are active in nightlife since that’s what I do best. However, I believe this can apply to anyone who’s interested in working with a life coach at some point in their lives.
In the first post, I shared the top 7 questions you should ask a life coach before you start working with them.
In the second post, I talked about the questions you should ask yourself before venturing out with a life coach so that you can get really intentional about the experience and get the most out of the outcomes.
In the third part - on my radio show/ podcast Mind The Music, I spilled the beans on why working with a (night)life coach is incredibly fascinating and how to find one that’s right for you.
This post will cover how you can prepare for a life coaching session so that you can maximize your coaching time.
Being active in nightlife is often challenging when it comes to your work-life balance. It can bring up guilt about how to combine nightlife with healthy living. A life coach can help you find that balance so that you can continue to feel good even after a big night out! Now that you’ve decided to go down the coaching road toward great personal transformation, stability and feeling peaceful, you want to get the most out of the experience. Here are a few tips on how you can prepare for your first life coaching session.
Before you get started
Your life coach may have a process about how to prepare for your first session - or any session after that. Talk to them before anything so that you can understand their set of guidelines and follow their guidance on this.
A few tips in case you’re finding it hard to let go of control.
First, let go of control
I know, funny hu? But seriously. Trust the process, trust that your coach has a plan - even if you don’t quite understand it yet. Set the intention that you’ll be open to the process and ready to be challenged. If that brings up resistance for you, then approach it with more play - look at everything as a fun experiment and remind yourself that you’ve got nothing to lose!
Look at your life right now
Which areas of your life are demanding most of your attention right now? It’s very insightful to have a closer look at this before you go to your life coach. This will help uncover areas for improvement in your life and define goals and objectives for your sessions. Do you want to create more time to work on creative music projects, to amp up your social life or to find balance in your life in general?

Keep a journal
Track your every step in a journal. You don’t need to spend hours writing in it if that’s not your thing. But writing things down helps you to declutter your brain. On paper is out of your head. One less thing to be occupied with. When your brain isn’t busy trying to remember ALL the things, it’s busy processing things. You also have to know that on a subconscious level, a whole lotta shit is going on, because your subconscious mind has been busy saving everything you’ve ever experienced - felt, saw, heard, smelled, thought. Add to that all of the thousands, millions of stimuli you receive daily, that almost sounds like your supercomputer is going to stop computing at some point, right? So how about you unburden it and therefore yourself, by keeping future stuff on paper.
Practice meditation
Meditation comes with a whole string of benefits, like relaxation, focus, feeling grounded and balanced and building resilience.
Practicing meditation daily enables you to grow a sense of inner strength and stability, a source of infinite energy you can always tap into. Meditation attunes you with the now, so that you can be and stay present in the moment, and focus on whatever it is that you are facing.
Before you go to your first life coaching session, put in a little meditation time and you’ll reap the rewards for sure.
I strongly believe everyone should meditate every single day for at least 10 minutes. I mean, what're 10 minutes right? I even created a 10-minute meditation myself just because I think it can be that easy. So much so in fact, that you can do it in a toilet stall, in your green room, during a break at work, on the train, you name it! No more excuses for not meditating. You can grab my free guided meditation below.
These tips will help you to prepare for your first life coaching session - and many more to come. As long as you keep in mind that your coach has a process or roadmap they want to take your through. So be sure to consult with them first and blend that with what works for you so that you can both maximize your coaching time!
In the fifth and final installment of my (night)life coaching miniseries, I will answer a few questions from my clients in my practice so that you can learn from them and get inspired. It’s coming to the blog next Tuesday, February 25th!
I would love to hear from you!
